The world of international sailing will settle for two weeks holiday at the foot of the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly.
From 17 June to 1 July 2012, Lorient host the French leg of the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly Whitbread), a round the world race which starts in Alicante (Spain) on November 5. The race will visit including Gallway (Ireland) via Miami, Auckland or Abu Dhabi (UAE). For two weeks, Lorient will be the colors of the race: a village of 20,000 m2 and a pontoon race will be fully open to the public. All facets of the race will be to discover, including the preparation of the teams on the technical area. Regattas, entertainment, concerts, free shows, boarding: the leg of the Volvo Ocean Race sailing event Lorient is the year 2012 in France.
Born in 1973, the Whitbread Race is the great ocean race crew around the world, organized every four years. The names of Eric Tabarly (four appearances), Grant Dalton (favorite of the 2011/2012) or Peter Blake, shining in the pantheon of this institution. The Whitbread is a perfect illustration of the antagonism between the French and English. Pen Duick VI, the ketch Eric Tabarly, was disqualified from the race after the first edition by a committee which tried out its keel settlement depleted uranium. But the French sailor finished third in 1993.
As the editions, the boats have evolved in the settlement that has grown from a gauge to a gauge flexible binding, then the semi-monotypes, until a rigorous gauge, named Whitbread Ocean Race 60 and VOR VOR 60 and 70, imposes a type of monohull.
