In the thirteenth century, with its 1,000 inhabitants, the village of Châteauneuf is enriched and already has a beautiful vineyard (300 hectares).
In 1308, Clement V made there still planting vines before dying a few years later, when he had just crossed the Rhone and came back home. The first Pope of Avignon was undoubtedly one of the first wine-growers in Châteauneuf.
Under Pope John XXII, the wines of Châteauneuf consistently among those that provide officers for the house of the Pontiff. This is undoubtedly the prelate who has contributed most to the development and reputation of the wine of Châteauneuf. John XXII bequeathed him the first name of its history, prestigious name "Vin du Pape" in which it will be recognized before becoming "The Chateauneuf-du-Pape."
It is also to John XXII that we owe the construction of the famous castle.
